BEST GIFT BOOK 2002
Did you ever wonder
what the future would be like?

a review by Fred Showker

TechTV's Catalog of Tomorrow with Editor Andrew Zolli is a fabulous book, and our selection for the BEST GIFT BOOK for the 2002 Holiday Season.

I rank this book up there with the Guinnes Book of Records as the perfect gift for yourself or anyone on your shopping list. It's highly interesting browsing material, with illustrated essays on everything from actuators to zero emissions. No matter what might perk your interest, it's here: genetic therapies, microscopic robots, virtual and augmented reality, unusual sources of energy and lots more to see and discover. Get the inside scoop on the new Segway scooter and learn about the future of Boeing private jets. Some of the items perhaps you've seen in the newspapers or on TV. Some of the items are like Ripley's Believe It Or Not and just plain weird but all in all you shouldn't find a boring page out of all 288.
Catalog of Tomorrow is as much like a magazine as it is a book -- you love to thumb through it...

Let's do some thumbing
and see what turns up:

Cyberglove ... Whoa... pick up things in cyber space!

Digital Ink Display:
Here's a photo of a prototype of the "e-Ink" from Phillips. It's an electronic newspaper. Yes, paper.

Cyborgs
Here's an implant the size of a grain of rice that stays in touch with healthcare providers with a constant dataflow of conditions for seriously ill patients. On the facing page we see an implant that goes in the back of the eyeball which works much like a digital video camera hooked directly into the blind person's optical nerve allowing them to see.

Fly the Smarter Skys
London to New York in an hour? This is not a "super sonic" jet it's a Mach jet

G.I. (dot) Joe The soldier of the future will be very different... uniform will sense and warn of approaching danger, holographic imaging will allow him to see through buildings or other obsticals, and direct smart weaponry to their targets through eye movements.

It's delicious fun ... some to be taken seriously, and some seriously stupid -- but it's all entertaining and all thought provoking for fun. Many problems are addressed too, like global warming, and overpopulation with solutions like telemedicine and environmentally benign energy generators. From medicine to the movies, from computers to the climate, change is everywhere around us, transforming the way we will live, work, play, and learn. We will likely experience as much change in the next three decades than we have in the two previous centuries.

It's not a cover-to-cover book, but the even the cover is too cool -- silver foil with die-cut 'windows' to the title page behind! And for a paltry seventeen bucks I'd be willing to bet this book will stay around your place for a long time -- and everyone who picks it up will find something to marvel over -- something to talk about -- and something to ponder about.
