Designing CSS Web Pages - by Christopher Schmitt... I rank this book at the top of the heap, right along with Meyer's book below. It was the most important book in successfully rehabilitating me from an "html terrorist" to "html purist." Now if I could just put that philosophy to work across some 7,000 pages of my web sites, I'd be okay! It's not so much a CSS handbook but rather an important inspiration to understand and apply the CSS. (Use with other books listed here!) And, Schmitt was the only author to take his time in email discussions about the concepts. - Paperback: 384 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 0.80 x 9.10 x 7.32; Publisher: New Riders Publishing; 1st edition (September 20, 2002) Price: $20.99
.
Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design - by Eric A. Meyer... Eric's wonderful "deconstruction" project was probably the single most helpful tutorial on CSS of any of the books studied. It took a step-by-step approach to walk me through the process of disassembling an over-weight, table-based web page (much like my own!) and rebuilding it in pure CSS tags. That chapter alone is worth the price of the book. Even after reading and digesting three other CSS books I wasn't real sure of the process until this single chapter. - Paperback, 321 pages Price: $31.50
.
Cascading Style Sheets: The Designer's Edge - by Molly E. Holzschlag... This, in my humble opinion, is Molly's finest hour. It's a beautiful book and jam-packed with excellent training. I found myself using it for ongoing browsing after putting Meyers and Schmitt down. Her makeover is as useful as Meyer's, perhaps more so. Get this one for sure. - Paperback: 304 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.69 x 10.14 x 8.00 Publisher: Sybex; 1 edition (March 11, 2003) Price: $31.50
.
DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web - by Jason Cranford Teague... As always, there's a Peachpit Visual Quickstart Guide close at my hand. Throughout all the tribulations of getting up to speed with CSS, this book was a constant companion, as it is to this day. Wrinkled cover and tattered, highlighted pages reveal it's pure utility as a desktop reference. This book has the absolute best guides for understanding boxes, padding, margins and borders. - Paperback: 592 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.25 x 9.00 x 7.04 Publisher: Peachpit Press; 2nd edition (May 24, 2001) Price: $15.39
.
Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability - by Steve Krug, Roger Black... Krug makes the points we've been evangelizing for the past seven years with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples of the best ways to design for your audience. Get a whole new outlook on your site. - Paperback: 195 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 0.53 x 9.02 x 7.00; Publisher: Que; 1st edition (October 13, 2000) Price: $24.50

Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation - by Owen Briggs, Steve Champeon, Eric Costello, Matthew Patterson... This book provides a lot of valuable information and insights into remote formatting. It also has good coverage of browser quirks. There are three fully explained case studies: a photo gallery, a personal log, and an online store that lend a lot of inspiration and idea starters. It also comes highly recommended by several readers of the CAFE list. - Paperback: 304 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 0.75 x 8.05 x 7.00; Publisher: glasshaus; 1st edition (May 2002) Price: $24.49
.
Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed - by Jakob Nielsen, Marie Tahir... This is the book we all love to hate -- regardless of how you feel about Jakob Nielsen, this book is an excellent reference book because it's not about Jakob! You'll like it. - Paperback: 138 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 0.73 x 9.92 x 9.94; Publisher: New Riders Publishing; 1st edition (November 5, 2001) Price: $27.99

Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide - by Eric A. Meyer... A bit dated, however, hiding behind these incredibly ugly pages is a complete foundation in CSS. Many, many succinct definitions coupled with clearly understandable diagrams put this one on the essential "references" shelf. By the time you read this, it may be out of print. - Paperback: 453 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 0.93 x 9.10 x 6.97; Publisher: O'Reilly & Associates; 1st edition (May 15, 2000) Price: $24.47
