I CAN TRACE MY INTEREST in type and letterforms back to the posters I drew for my junior high school elections. I can remember spending hours on the lettering, measuring out the strokes of each character, the spaces between each letter as well as the spaces between the lines. Those posters would appear extremely crude by professional standards, but my interest in the geometry of letters and the relationships between their positive and negative spaces was evident even then.
Type Rules gives superb tutorage in the ways and arts of type and typography. No, it's not steeped toward publication design as is Alex White's Type In Use, but rather a survey of proper, historic, tasteful, innovative, and creative ways of type. They both need to be on your bookshelf. Each page is a luscious immersion in the stuff that makes good type. You already know my love an passion for typography... well, this is the book I would dream of writing if I were to write about typography. Ilene shares a brief but fulfilling history of type in "From Metal to Mac" then covers the look and postures of type, selecting the right type for the job, basic techniques for emphasis, fine tuning and tweaking, typos and how to avoid them, symbols and dingbats, customizing fonts: Dos & Don'ts and even designing your own typeface. Many of the chapters have both basic and advances versions which get you into the real 'passion' of typography. (Here's a sample spread directly from the book!) The book is loaded with superb illustrations and examples -- not to be confused with the run of the mill type books out ther -- Ilene works at the top of the ivory tower. In her years at U&Lc she worked with the very best typographers in the industry: Ed Benguait, Gerard Huerta, Jim Parkinson and Herb Lubalin to name just a few! Take a look at this example. If you don't buy this book now, you'll be missing a most important opportunity to increase your skills and understanding of typography by quantum leaps. . "Type Rules: The Designer's Guide to Professional Typography needs to be part of any visual communicator's bookshelf!"
