BEST BOOK 2001Martin Evening’s
Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers
This is not a test

I just recently discovered the Focal Press and Martin Evening’s new Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers. How could I have not seen the book before? I immediately scooped it up and have been captivated by it ever since.
Adobe Photoshop for Photographers__ Martin has changed the rules for publishing Photoshop tutorial books. Having reviewed all the dummie and idiot books, the visual quick starters, Deke’s fiasco Photoshop 6 book, and yes, even Adobe’s own Classroom book – this is not a continuation – this is not a test – this is the real thing.
Adobe Photoshop for Photographers__ Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers has a clear, clean layout with superbly detailed content on nearly all of Photoshop’s features, old and new. It’s wonderfully Illustrated with color images throughout, and (my favorite) includes real-life assignments from leading photography professionals – the real difference between the bulk-book authors who guess at the technique and the pros who are actually doing it.
__ Let me share with you just one of the many, many practical experiences explained in step-by-step tutorials. This is one of my favorites. These images are directly from the “Montage Techniques” chapter where Martin lets you tag along on a photo assignment. You’re challenged with the task of adding a soldier and flag to a photo of the monument. You thought this kind of assemblage was easy, didn’t you? But as you walk along, seeing the techniques used by the real pros you’ll become enlightened by the nuances of real montaging. First, you see the raw materials – the monument, photographed with a stand-in. Then you proceed to add in the image of the soldier and flag – making careful adjustments along the way – to the final product. The lessons in this chapter alone are well worth the price of the whole book.
__ Later in the book Martin covers Black and White techniques for the forgotten population of photographers and publishers who’s clients don’t have a color budget – or those millions of desktop publishers who are trapped in the daily grind of newspaper and quick-copy jobs – seldom even seeing a color press.
Adobe Photoshop for Photographers__ Here is one of the many diagrammatic illustrations you’ll find, that purvey more raw learning than a dozen pages of text. All throughout the book are diagrams, charts, menus and dialogs that reinforce the learning experience. (Click to open diagram in a new browser window)
__ Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers takes you from introduction to working with digital images, providing essential information on everything from scanning devices to color management and output issues. Practical workshops show you how to master the essential techniques, such as optimizing an image for prepress, color correction, retouching techniques, layers palette management, toning a black and white image, rendering textures and so on.
The CD-ROM presents elegant learning examples through the use of QuickTime movie tutorials – 176 megabytes – in both MAC and PC format. In reality, the CD is better than many I’ve seen as stand-alone training Cds that sell for double the price of the book. Also included are Photoshop 5.5 color management and Photoshop 6 color management PDF texts, a huge collection of demo images, a collection of related movie tutorials: concerning the history brush, path drawingand others.
__ Whether you are an accomplished user or are just starting out, this book contains a wealth of practical advice, hints and tips that will guarantee professional-looking results. If you are involved in working with photographs in a commercial environment this book is a necessity. If you just want to enjoy and learn the most powerful capabilities of Photoshop 6, then the book should be at the top of your wish list – but don’t wait. You want to get started on this right away.
