Web Pages
That Suck

by
Vincent Flanders & Michael Willis

It's easy to see why Vincent and Michael's website of the same name has become an award winning site.

... They use a straightforward approach to design and insert plenty of humor too. I found this a delightful way to learn how to make a web page that doesn't suck! Seldom does a book entertain as well as instruct. Web Pages That Suck does both. No boring book on design here, and nothing or no one is sacred. It doesn't matter if your name happens to be "Pepsi, Microsoft or Coors" if it sucks it sucks.

Don't get me wrong, this book does not just slam bad sites, the authors show you what is wrong and more importantly, how to improve it. Each site that is featured, the good and the sucky, are summed up with an evaluation.
... Here is a sample of the Pepsi evaluation at the time of the books printing. (This site has since changed)

Site Design at Pepsi:
Don't use any of the techniques you see here. If there's a worthwhile site design technique used here, neither Michael nor I can find it.
Navigation at Pepsi: This is an oxymoron like "fresh frozen." This site fails Navigation 101
Pluses at Pepsi: None
Problems at Pepsi: The whole site

This book is full of full color illustrative examples. I think the quote from the back cover sums it up perfectly. "Flanders and Willis rip bad pages to shreds-and then show you who's doing it right."
... Written for the rest of us, Web Pages That Suck demystifies the big guys and passes along all the tools you need to be a player on the Web. Hurry and get this book so you too can build Web Pages that Don't Suck!
