Sams Teach yourself
Corel DRAW 9 in 24 hours
by David Karlins

Are your CorelDRAW 9 challenged? You have the newest version of CorelDRAW 9; you open it up and don't have the foggiest idea of where to start? Then this is a great book to get you up to speed quickly and painlessly. There is no reason to be overwhelmed anymore, even if you don't know the difference between a Vector and a Tractor (I borrowed that phrase from David Karlins). The author will guide you through the process of creating illustrations in Draw.

So let's fire up your copy of CorelDRAW 9 and start illustrating. You'll find the 24, 1- hour lessons packed with valuable training where each lesson builds on your skills. In section 1, hours 1-3 you begin with the basics, there is also a nice tearout sheet with the tools and shortcuts to keep nearby. By page 15 you are already using the tools, it's just drawing a line, but hey, you've got to start somewhere. There are short quizzes at the end of each chapter so you can test your own understanding. Then you'll get into curves, text, and artistic test. By the end of chapter 3 you will have already made a magazine cover with a rectangle, pie, graph pager, star, spiral and artistic text. Not bad for three hours!

Section II, hours 4-7, you'll start with page layout, objects, outlines, fill and color. Another magazine cover, including bitmap fills, and texture fills, it's a nice looking map design.

Section III, hours 8-10 you'll be working with curves and make a logo with freehand tools a logo with waves, using trace, a logo using shapes transferred into curves

Section IV, hours 11-14, covers adding effects such as bitmaps, color masks, removing backgrounds, lens and Powerclip toys, oops, I mean tools.

Powerclip is one of my favorite tools; above is a sample of a text logo using powerclip. For this illustration which is part of a logo for a health food company. I started with numerous pieces of clipart grouped together. Then using the Powerclip tool I was able to put it into my globe, automatically cutting out the unused areas. It was as easy as; put this in here.
