A message from the editor:
Thanks for reading. Many, many people ask me... "Please recommend a basic set of books for the graphic designer." I believe this collection to be an essential set of books for both the starter and the practicing professional. These, coupled with the New York Art Director's Club annuals, and the Print Magazine Regional annuals will give you a good, basic design bookshelf.
My "Design Mind" bibliography will expand and broaden your design intelligence -- and the "Business of Design" bibliography is essential for the self-employed designer as well as many in the corporate or agency design world. If you lean toward typography, you'll want to see my Typography Recommendations page.
Visual Design Bibliography
Robin Williams Design Workshop - by Robin Williams, John Tollett... This is the design workshop book I would have designed if I were an author! This is the one I recommend when asked: "What book should I get as a starter?" It's beautifully written and illustrated in the best Williams and Tollett tradition - Paperback: 280 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.65 x 9.03 x 9.02, Publisher: Peachpit Press; 1st edition (October 20, 2000) Price: $27.99
Designers in Handcuffs - by Pat Matson Knapp, Lisa Buchanan (Designer)... I read this book and experienced so many rushes of deja vous I couldn't believe it! It's interesting how so many in the design profession experience similar situations, and cope with them in similar ways. While Pat Knapp has done a wonderful job putting this book together, I suspect she has no idea how much truth is contained therein. - Hardcover: 192 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.86 x 7.02 x 5.28 Publisher: How Design Books; (March 2003) Price: $20.99
