Creating e-books

by Chris Van Buren, Jeff Cogswell

When we launched our series of self-publishing last month, I knew Poor Richard's Creating E-Books by Chris Van Buren and Jeff Cogswell had to be included in the mix. I remember back to the Top Floor Publishing's first debut on the internet scene with Peter Kent's "Poor Richard's Web Site" book, and the refreshing slant it offered contrasting the hip-hop, trendy web designers in those early days.

Now Top Floor is back with Poor Richard's Creating E-Books and engaging and well researched book on getting your ideas into print. But it's not confined to e-books -- herein you'll also get good ideas about self promotion and low-cost marketing and promotion.

Features include a complete electronic publishing overview including a discussion of the various hardware and software available and an overview of the industry. It provides the necessary foundation for understanding what exactly e-books are, and how the market works.

Then you'll take a tour through planning and creating your e-book, and the process of putting an e-book together. You'll also learn the inside issues of copy protection -- a big issue today, especially after the e-music industry's big fight of 2000, the Napster case.

In the E-Book Business Issues section you'll learn about the economics of the publishing industry, including the pre-production costs, distribution costs, and selling costs of e-books. The chapter on e-book publishing contracts takes a detailed look at electronic rights. There are also lots of helpful business tips for e-publishers in this section.

This is one of the important additions to any publisher's bookshelf. And if you aspire to self-publish, it's a must.
