Adobe Photoshop 5.5
FUNDAMENTALS
with ImageReady 2
.
By Gary David Bouton

GARY DAVID BOUTON is a prolific writer, designer and above all master of graphic images. He’s authored more than sixteen books devoted to computer graphics -- nine of which have trained, mentored and thrilled Photoshop users around the world. Gary is a frequent contributor to our LETTERS column, unselfishly helping those who write with their questions. Well, he’s done it again, and this we believe is his finest work yet.
__ FUNDAMENTALS is a comprehensive yet easy to use guide to many facets of Photoshop that always seem to elude even the most experienced user. While I believe everyone who uses Photoshop will greatly benefit from the book, it’s definitely not a beginners book. The beginners chapter is 85 out of over 500 pages, so you can immediately see Gary jumps into the good stuff right away.

__ The “Working Smart” and “ImageReady” sections are well worth the cost of the book alone. If you’ve read much of Deke McClelland’s work compared to Gary’s you’ll see they have distinctly different styles. Gary seems to cut right to the chase to walk you through real-world examples and operations where Deke attempts to educate us with intracacies.
__ The entire first section arms you with the essentials from becoming a master at layerology to those cute parlor tricks everyone wants to know -- which come in handy when someone asks if you “know” Photoshop.
__ In the Design Bookshelf, we’ll show you more pictures than we could comfortably accommodate here in the pdf edition, but let me say the CD-Rom that comes with this book is ALSO worth the admission alone!

__ The CD-Rom contains a superb set of tutorial illustrations and work files that follow closely with the exercises in the book. So you’re not only working on ‘hypothetical’ projects, you’re working on the projects Gary is describing. You cannot understand the value of this until you’ve tried it. But that’s not all. The Boutons have also included a whole collection of very nifty clip art, textures and goodies that are not to be found in any other publication you’ll run across. Unlike some of the other books that just include the same clip and the same tired old stock photos of mountains and flowers and stuff, this is custom, original art. Mostly created by Gary himself, or Gary’s “reality-checker” Barbara Bouton.

__ Also included in the CD is a good collection of fonts Gary has collected as well as new tryouts of several good add-on products.
__ Probably most important however is the fourth section which deals with ImageReady. Many PS 5.5 users haven’t really tested the waters very much with IR, and if you’re one of those, hang on to your hat. IR’s power-suite is for web design and imaging. Gary gives you the juice for creating image maps, animations and rollovers. And he uncovers the real info you need that is so lacking in Adobe’s documentation.
__ All of this Gary does with snappy graphics and some of the very best screen captures of menus and dialog windows I’ve seen in a book. When you read about dragging a layer, the illustration actually feels like you’re dragging a layer.
There’s no uncertainty about the diagrams, and no uncertainty that Bouton’s FUNDAMENTALS is the Editor’s Choice book on Photoshop -- so far for 2000!
