Protect Your Digital Privacy! Survival Skills for the Information Age by Glee Harrah Cady, Pat McGregor, Jo Beverley (Introduction) is truly a landmark book -- one that is long overdue. Each day that goes by we see bigger and more powerful schemes to rob computer users of their privacy. The really scary thing is that 99% of the people haven't a clue they're being sold into slavery -- and won't know until it's way too late.
Many other people who actually know about many of the issues refuse to believe it. I was talking to a prominent member of a computer club (user group) the other day and I mentioned the projects we're working on in the Association of Apple Computer Users and Groups to advocate user privacy in legislation. I asked if he surfed with cookies off or on, or if he monitored such things. "Oh, I never worry about that" he said, "Besides there's nothing you can do about it!" Wrong attitude!
But you should know, and you should be concerned about it. Protect Your Digital Privacy is a practical guide for the general Internet user -- someone who isn't a technical whiz or a lawyer, and who'd like to know more about keeping his information private online and off. Everyone needs clear, everyday explanations of laws concerning how personal data is handled, and detailed guidelines to help set up computers and software to keep control of what they expose to the evil, self-serving underbelly of the online world.

Just ask yourself:

* What is privacy anyway, and why should you care?
* Who wants to know about you, and what do they want to know?
* Can you really be anonymous?
* How is technology used to invade your privacy, and what can you do about it?
* How can you prevent identity theft, and what can you do if it happens to you?
* Are you being watched in public places, while you drive, while you shop?
* Can your cell phone and toll pass endanger your privacy?
* What laws and regulations affect your privacy, and how do they help you protect your information?
* What advocacy organizations exist, and what can they do for you?
* Do you know what's coming up on the privacy and legal horizons?

If you don't know the answers, perhaps you should.

This book gives you the answers -- covering both current and near-future technologies, and the privacy risks that users face. Also included are practical recommendations-including third party hardware and software solutions-for implementing privacy safeguards when using different digital devices. The introduction, by award-winning novelist Jo Beverley, helps readers who aren't certain if they need to care about privacy see how privacy issues concern everyone.

The book is built around
* An extensive privacy checklist to help make privacy decisions
* 20 essays by noted journalist, technologists, and policy-makers, such as Molly Ivins, Declan McCullagh, Cindy Cohn, Angela Gunn, Jason Catlett, Ron Plesser, Marty Abrams, and Carl Ellison.
